In this guide I will show you how to convert your mk3 electric boot release switch
in the top of the centre console to the mk3.5 square versions in the centre console next to the gear gaiter.
Why do it? Well its mainly because the old switches are not much cop really, its huge and horrid feel and look.
Another reason why they might be changed is to free up space in the centre console.
It's very straight forward.
Tools Needed:
screwdrivers (Various)
Sharp Knife
Small drill bit
Files
Soldering Equipment
Wire Cutters/Strippers
Lighter
|
Push the button!
|
It works
Press It!
Applies to:
All MK3's with the old
button in the center console
|
|
What you need from a scrap yard or ebay and other sources:
A length or wiring loom with the plug still intact
A Mk3.5 Boot Release Switch
A top coin tray from the centre console.
Male blade terminals
Heatshrink 2 different sizes
|
|
Remove some of the padding from the new wires and strip the ends of the wires to reveal the copper inner.
Next crimp on a male blade connector, insulated or not, up to you.
Repeat for the other wire.
Place some heat shrink tubing over the connectors individually so only the blade is exposed, heat it up with a lighter to seal it all in.
|
|
Now you will be left with a loom about 20cm long with a plastic plug on one end and two metal pins on the other.
|
|
Remove the switch panel and then switch by disconnecting the plug from the rear.
Working inside the centre console, press the male connectors from the new loom into
the old plug making sure there is no metal exposed to cause a short.
Up to you this next bit, but personally I would wrap insulation tape around the connecter block to stop it working loose.
|
|
Push the new switch into the multiplug and test it. It will only work with the ignition off
so give it a go and hay presto the boot should pop open.
If it works and you have the black centre console with the hole for the switch, simply disconnect
the switch and feed the wiring through the hole, reconnect and push home till it clicks.
If you have the grey console you may need to cut a hole for the button,
This is a 5-minute job if you measure correctly and mark out (I created a template in MS Word),
drill a number of holes then use a knife to cut the plastic, its only soft so it will be easy.
Its up to you where you want it but the intended position works well next to the gear gaiter.
Once cut, install the switch as above and your done.
Replace the coin tray.

To acompany this guide i will shortly be showing you how to convert the electric window switches
in the centre console, to the illuminated mk3.5 versions in the doors.
There you have it, a simple guide to move a switch
Hope this guide is of some help.
