Changing Ignition Barrel on cars with/without PATS

Ever had to replace the locks in your car and had to have 2 sets of keys because of the PATS system?

At last I had the guts to remove the codes from the keys, replace the barrel and put
them into the matching set for the doors, boot and fuel cap.

Whats Needed:

Small Flat Blade Screw Driver
New Lock Set - Complete (Doors, Boot, Fuel Cap & Ignition Barrel)
Phillips Screw Driver

One set of Keys!

Which key is the ignition key??

Applies to:
Mk3, MK3.5, Mk4, (Mk5 & Mk6?)
locks

Remove the steering column shroud upper and lower,
the lower has 4 torx screws and upper has 2 on the top and a further 2 under the shroud.

Remove the ignition switch from the clips using a Small Flat Screw Driver
and hang out the way. Using the Phillips Screw Driver,
unscrew the PATS Code Receiver (black box which goes around the barrel), and put out the way.

Put the key into the ignition barrel and turn to position I, using the small screwdriver,
push in the pin on the barrel to release the barrel from the steering rack.
Slide out and discard, keep the keys handy for the moment as will be needed later.

Place new set of keys in new barrel to the same point as the old one (so that the pin can be pressed in!),
insert new barrel in the slot and turn key to the off position and remove key.

Reattach the ignition wiring plug (just clips on), refit the steering column shroud in reverse of removal, like the Haynes manual says!

If you have an older Fiesta without PATS, then your job here is done… if you have PATS then read on!

Now you have fitted the barrel in the rack and refitted everything back into place,
test the switch by putting new keys in and turning car on, you will notice
the red LED on the clock flashing like mad… this is the PATS System telling
you the codes DO NOT match. Also if you try turning the engine over,
it won't start as the fuel pump is run into the PATS.

So to Fix This…

On the keys, there is a red cap on the top. Get the new keys and remove
the caps by using the Small Flat Blade Screw Driver,
once you get the cap off there should be a small plastic clip thing
(my Red Master Key had a rubber boot over the capsule, no plastic thing)
holding a glass capsule (looks like a long headache pill) this is the PATS Code for the car.
Remove the capsules from the new keys and discard somewhere totally out of the way.

Remove the capsules from the old keys and put them into the new ones,
refit the red caps on the keys and test again… turn to ACC and see if
the Red LED on the clock comes on as normal and then goes out, if it does!
Give yourself a big pat on the back as you've just saved yourself about £200.

If not, check to make sure the capsule is the correct one for the car (that came out of the old keys) and try again.

Do the remaining keys; make sure the new Red key has the same code capsule as the old Red key

!!IMPORTANT!!

DO NOT put the code capsule from the Red Key into a Black Key, It will screw up the PATS, trust me!!!

The End

Hope this guide is of some use.
