As you may have seen in the interior section of the site there is a guide for fitting a Ford
Starlight interior light timed delay, and as many of you are having problems getting
hold of one of the starlight's, I thought I'd better do a guide that uses the mk4 and 5
relay which is still available from ford,
This will have the same affect as the starlight where it delays and fades out the light.
Another feature of this relay is that it switches off immediately if you turn the ignition key.

Tools Needed:

Screw Drivers
Socket Set
soldering stuff

Parts Needed:

Mk4/5 Yellow delay relay
Relay socket with pins
Spade connectors male and female
Piggyback connector
Wire

Lets Fade Away!

Applies to any ford car!

Start off with getting the parts you need, the relay on the mk4 Fiesta and mk5 onwards Escort,
fuse box is directly connected to it, so simply pull out the fuse and take it (Pay for it),
oh it's a big yellow one with red writing on it with 5 pins on the bottom.

Here is the code numbers that are on the one I have here:

FORD 68 125
85GG 13C718 AA
IMP. - GEBER ZUS
BELEUCHTONG TUR
12V-

delay

Now you need to get hold of the relay socket, either get an additional socket from ford ,
they class them as aux relay holders that clip to the fuse box or go out and buy one from an auto electrician.
Or better still, get one from a scrappers, mk3 and 4 fiestas usually have these for the pats relays.

Lets start with looking at the wiring before we go any further, simple 5 wire connection.

Mk4 Relay
Pin Number
Description
15
Ignition Switched 12V supply
30
Permanent 12V supply
31
Earth
31L
To Light
31S
From door switch

Looking from underneath the relay pins will look like this:

delay

Take out the fuse box by removing the two screws that hold the box to the dash then release it,
it will drop out to the rear of the dash allowing you to take it apart to gain access to the wires inside.

Firstly clip the aux relay socket to the side of the fuse box so you know how much wire is needed for the next steps.

delay

Now starts the fun, the wiring up.

Totally at random ill start with pin 31 the earth.
Extend the wire from the pin that corresponds with the pin on the relay in the socket to reach to
one of the earthling points in the fuse box, the earthling points are located under the relay side of the fuse box.
Crimp on the piggyback connector and make sure it is insulated.

delay delay

Connect this earth on the relay side of the fuse box; there will be a metal strip along
the back edge with a number of brown wires connected to it.
Pull out one of these connectors and push it onto the piggy back of the new connector from the relay.
Push this assembly onto the prong where you took the earth connector off.

delay delay delay

Now move onto pin 30, this is the permanent live feed to the relay.
This needs to be connected to the thin red wire from the back of fuse 2.
This wire/fuse supplies the power to the interior light, cig lighter and clock and now the relay.

delay

Pin 31S will be the next terminal to connect to your car. You will need to make this
wire long enough to reach the drivers side door switch that makes the light come on when you open the door.
Fit a female blade to the end of this wire (Right in picture)

delay

Remove the door switch and disconnect the wire allowing it to drop. Then use a length
of stiff wire like a coat hanger and poke it through the hole and tape the wire
from the relay to it and pull up through the hole then connect it to the switch and refit it.

delay delay

Now move onto terminal 31L this wire again needs to be extended to the same
length as above and terminated into a male spade connector and plugged
into the original plug that you removed from the back of the door switch. The wire should be brown/red.

delay delay

Finally the last wire to connect is terminal 15, the ignition live feed.
This needs to be connected to the Black/Yellow wire from the back of fuse 17 in the fuse box,
bare the wire and solder the wire from the relay to it.
For any one that wants to know, fuse 17 supplies ignition feed live to the clock,
stop lamp switch and rear heated window switch among others.

delay

Plug the relay in, replace all trim and fuse box and open the door and the light
should come on and when you close it, it should start to fade.
But if you turn on the car it should stop the fade out straight away.
