Ever wanted to get one step closer to achieving the flush rear look?
Here is step one, Moving the Number plate.
Been in the garage for a little while working on my SI bumper.
I want to flush the boot so i need somewhere to stick the number plate,
so i worked on a recess for the back bumper and it looks great!
Tools Needed:
Spanners/Sockets
Screwdrivers
Angle Grinder or Jigsaw
Fibre Glass
Filler
Sand Paper
Primmer and paint
Remove that plate!
What you are aiming for
Nice and shiny
Remove the bumper from the car from within the boot, 2 13mm Bolts on the rear panel and 2 screws in each wheel arch.
Pop up the number plate light and disconnect the wires.
First i marked up the position i wanted the recess and got the work with the grinder...Grrrrrr!
Then once i cut through the plastic and the foam i marked up the angle i wanted the recess to sit
at and scored slots for the ply wood to sit in
Then the legal part, gotta keep it lit up so i cut a slot for the numberplate light to go in..
Cut a piece of marine ply or plastic or metal to slightly bigger than the recess
Then after a struggle i squeezed in the ply, made sure it was in nice and tight...
Then finally i whacked the fibreglass on ...and thats how its been left for a while!
Make sure you block the old numberplate light hole and fibreglass over it just under the surface.
Man i got a headache after that though lol...solvent abuse kills

When the fibreglass has dried, smooth over it with filler. Let it dry and rub it back with sand paper.
repeate the above step until you are happy with the smoothness of the surface.
Remember i told you to fibreglass the light hole just under the surface,
this is to allow you to put filler over it and leave the surface smooth for painting.
Spray the area with primmer, allow to dry and you may see holes or an un even surface at this stage,
if thats the case, rub it back and apply more filler then spray again.
Rub the area that is primmed with fine sand paper, clean it, spray it again,
Repeate this a few times then Spray the area with the top coat.
Allow to dry then rub down between coats, untill the last coat.
If required apply a clear coat and allow to dry.
Once dry refit the bumper to the car and admire your work.
