In this guide I will show you how to replace damaged or worn fixing studs on any ford spoiler.
I will be using the 1989-92 optional RS lower spoiler.
This spoiler is heavy so requires a hefty fixing.
Tools Needed:
Drill
Drill bits
Tap kit
Dremel
Mole grips
Parts Needed:
Spoiler
New studs/ bolts
Nuts

Studs

What you are aiming for
Nice and shiny

|
Right we will start at looking at the condition of your existing studs,
if they look like this or snapped they will need to be replaced.
|
|
Grip the stud using the mole grips and unscrew it,
hopefully it will come out and leave the thread in the hole
|
|
Clean away any old sealant from the hole, to make it clean.
|
|
If the studs break off in the spoiler, or if they were already broken you will need to re-tap the spoiler,
(Retapping is the insertion of a new thread)
Below is the hole where a stud broke off.
|
|
Using a drill and dremel you will need to bore out the hole to the size below the tap you are going to use.
Once it has been drilled you will need to tap it,
put the tap bit in the drill and set it to the slowest speed you can and take it steady
as it cuts the new thread in the metal, when it stops you will have to put the drill in reverse to remove the tap.
|
|
Repeat the above for any other studs that have broken.
Below are two different ways of fixing the spoiler to the car,
The first is a bolt directly through the metal into the spoiler, make sure you use a washer.
The second is a new stud, the end will need cutting off once the thread has been bonded into the spoiler.
Then simply drill a hole in the body work and secure with a nylock nut and washer.

There you have it a guide on re studding
Hope this guide is of some help.
